Tuesday 5 October, 2021
New rules for outdoor tyre storage came into force on 20 August 2021 after the gazetting of the Resource Management (National Environmental Standards for Storing Tyres Outdoors) Regulations 2021.
The new regulations provide consistent rules across the country and gives regional councils the power to implement the rules, and ensure that tyres are collected and stored in a way that does not harm the environment.
In summary, outdoor tyre storage of less than 20 cubic metres is a permitted activity. Outdoor tyre storage of between 20 and 100 cubic metres is permitted, provided it complies with standards controlling the height of storage and proximity to sensitive areas. Outdoor tyre storage exceeding 100 cubic metres, or not complying with the standards, is a restricted discretionary activity.
