Qualifications : LLB (Hons), BA in Economics, University of Auckland.

Tom is a partner in our commercial property team, and has a broad array of experience acting for owners, occupiers, and developers across the real estate spectrum. This includes experience in relation to hotels and tourism, complex development work, investment, real estate finance and commercial leasing. 

Over the course of Tom’s career, he has acted for a number of private and public real estate entities in New Zealand, the UK and the Middle East. Tom focuses on understanding the commercial drivers that underpin each project, and on delivering a client-focused commercial outcome.

Tom has been practicing since 2011 and joined Tompkins Wake in 2024. Tom has worked offshore in both the UK and Middle East for over 7 years, including with two of the UK’s recognised leaders in real estate work, CMS and Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner, as well as with two significant national property-focused firms.

  • Acting for a school trust board in relation to the joint venture development and leasing of a significant industrial project in South Auckland.
  • Acting for a commercial developer in relation to the structuring of its joint venture with a large institutional investor and for the JV on subsequent development projects.
  • Acting for a commercial developer in relation to the development and leasing of a significant warehousing facility in Drury.
  • Acting for numerous investors in relation to the acquisition, disposal and leasing of single and portfolio assets in New Zealand and the UK (including Columbia Threadneedle, Quintain Estates & Development plc. and Mitsui Fudosan in the UK).
  • Acting for a specialist medical centre developer in relation to its development projects across New Zealand.
  • Acting for an airport owner in relation to a joint venture with neighbours to enable the development of a master planned commercial project.
  • Acting for an airline in relation to the development of a purpose-built cargo facility.
  • Acting for a build to rent developer in relation to the development of its projects in Auckland.
  • Advising various Abu Dhabi based soveriegn wealth funds and their related entities (including Mubadala and Masdar) in relation to various mixed use real estate developments.
  • Acting in relation to the negotiation of numerous hotel management agreements (including for the Emirates Palace and the St. Regis Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi).
  • Advising Quitain Estates & Development plc. in relation to the master planned development and leasing of Wembley Park in London.
