John re-joined Tompkins Wake in 2024 as Special Counsel in our dispute resolution and litigation team after a two-year term as Senior Legal Counsel at the Commerce Commission.

An experienced litigator, John spent the first two years of his legal career as a judges’ research clerk. He then began practising as a litigation lawyer in 2013, first at a law firm in Auckland and then at Brodies LLP in Edinburgh, where his specialist team was recognised as “the leading firm in the professional indemnity arena in Scotland” (Legal 500) and ranked Band 1 by Chambers.

John has extensive experience in negligence claims and insurance-related issues. He has acted for insurers and insureds in a wide-range of claims and complaints in New Zealand and overseas, including on numerous high-profile matters. In addition to those areas, John has broad experience in general contractual and commercial disputes and insolvency matters. He has acted in disputes involving a variety of professions and businesses, including lawyers, accountants, insurance brokers, tax advisers, surveyors, valuers, liquidators, engineers, builders, manufacturers, and those involved in New Zealand’s primary industries.

John ensures that clients understand the legal issues they are facing and works proactively with them to achieve the best legal and practical outcomes possible.
